Leon Cabarroguis Magalona, 74, surrounded by his family, entered peacefully into eternal rest, on July 29, 2021 at Lovelace Medical Center, Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was born on September 26, 1946 in Manila to the late Enrique B. Magalona and the late Atty. Carmen Magalona.
Leon was born in Manila and raised in Iloilo City, Philippines. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Banking & Finance from Mapua Institute of Technology and his Master of Business Administration (MBA) Degree from Polytechnic University of the Philippines. Leon lived in Manila until 2012 when he immigrated to the United States and became a resident of Queens, NY and Albuquerque, NM.
Leon, also known as “Leo” and “Boy” to his family and friends, was a former employee of Philippine Veterans Bank where he actively participated in the choir group and played table tennis. He was also an active member of the Marikina Table Tennis Club, Rego Park Senior Center Table Tennis Club and the Albuquerque Chess Club. His real passion, however, is game fowl breeding which garnered him hundreds of friends from all over the world.
Leon was a recipient of the 2018 Father of the Year Award, given by the National Federation of Filipino American Association (New York). He was also a published author, an avid chess & table tennis player, a voracious reader, and a respected breeder of game fowls. Before his death, Leon was starting to gain popularity on YouTube for his game fowl breeding lessons, and was working on his second book, which his children plans to publish posthumously.
Leon was preceded in death by his parents, Enrique and Carmen Magalona; sisters, Nydia Gopez and Delia Agapito; and brother, Dr. Edwin Magalona.
Leon is survived by his wife of 50 years, Nancy Ann D. Magalona; his children Ethel Magalona, Eunice Magalona, Elaine Schroeder, Erwin Toshiro Magalona and Essen Mugford; daughter-in-law Elizabeth Magalona; sons-in-law Junie Asis, Gregory Schroeder and Samuel Mugford; grandchildren Elline Regina, Erin Renee, Yuan, Gavin, Ellise Martina and Emilia Alessandra; brothers Enrique Jr. (Daggy) and Jose Eugenio (Gene); nieces and nephews; cousins; relatives; friends; and many people both in the United States and in the Philippines whose lives he touched.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 8th 2021 from 2:00pm to 6:00pm at Zuasola Funeral Homes, 44 Bay Ave. Bloomfield, NJ 07003. Funeral mass will be held on Friday, August 13th 2021 at 12:00noon at St. Therese of Lisieux Church, 120 Monroe Ave. Cresskill, NJ 07626 followed by interment at Mary Rest Catholic Cemetery, 770 Darlington Ave. Mahwah, NJ 07430.
